The Cheaper PA Quote Was 28% Less. We Still Chose Electro-Voice Stadium Speakers.

It was a Tuesday in late March when our ops manager dropped the request on my desk. A regional sports complex needed a full sound system for their summer event series. First show: June 14th. Not flexible. They'd already sold hospitality packages, booked the headline act, and announced the schedule to the press. Fourteen weeks sounded like plenty until we broke it down: system design, client approval rounds, procurement, delivery lead times, installation, load-in, and a full day of tuning. The margin for error was roughly zero.

In my role, I review every speaker cabinet that goes into a rental package—roughly 200 units a year, for four years now. Most people think quality inspection is just checking for dents. It's not. I've rejected shipments for crushed corners and stripped rigging points. I've caught brand-new woofers with voice coil rub that sounded fine at low volume but distorted the moment you pushed them hard. I've opened boxes where the input panel was wired out of phase. When a date is fixed, every equipment gamble becomes a financial gamble. That's a lesson I learned the slow way.

The system design itself was straightforward. About 9,000 people in a horseshoe stadium, mostly open air. We needed main arrays left and right, front fill for the floor seats, and subwoofers to cover the field. The venue's production consultant had written “electro-voice stadium speakers” into the equipment rider—specifically, line arrays from “a proven major brand, e.g., Electro-Voice.” That wording is typical. Consultants name-drop brands but leave the interpretation to people like me.

Given our history with EV gear surviving tours and truck packs, I had no reason to argue. The preliminary spec:

  • 12× EV line array cabinets per side for the mains
  • 6× Electro-Voice EV4 series cabinets for front fill (the newer compact boxes in EV's latest professional speaker lineup)
  • 4× 18-inch bass PA speaker enclosures for low end
  • 6× 12-inch 2-way wedge monitors for the stage

The Cheaper Quote

Then procurement came back with a spreadsheet that stopped me mid-bite of a sandwich.

“Found a cheaper option. Same specs. 28% less.”

That's the moment when a project either gets better or gets a whole lot worse.

You search “12 inch 2 way loudspeaker system price” across the market and you'll see why the comparison is dangerous. A 12-inch 2-way cabinet has, in principle, four components that matter: the woofer, the compression driver, the horn, and the crossover. Two boxes can look identical on a feature matrix and perform completely differently in a real venue. Entry-level 12-inch boxes run about $250–450 per cabinet. Mid-range workhorses—like Electro-Voice's EKX line or comparable series—sit around $500–900. Premium touring-grade cabinets go beyond $1,200 each (based on major U.S. pro-audio retailer listings, mid-2025; verify current rates). The cheaper quote landed at the low end of the entry-level band. Our spec was mid-range. On a 14-cabinet order, the gap was roughly $4,200.

What the Spec Sheet Didn't Say

I should have flagged it immediately. Instead, I made the classic rookie mistake: assuming “12-inch, 2-way” means the same thing to every manufacturer. It doesn't.

The spec sheet for the cheaper cabinet looked fine. 12-inch woofer, titanium compression driver, 90° × 60° horn, 1,200W peak handling, 130 dB max SPL, frequency response claimed at 59 Hz – 20 kHz. Nothing there would raise a red flag if you skimmed it on a Friday afternoon.

But our design called for a 60° × 40° horn. The wider vertical coverage of the alternative meant two problems. First, energy going up into the stadium roof instead of out into the seats. Second—and worse—energy bleeding back toward the stage, where the wedge monitors would pick it up. On a concrete floor in front of a band, that's a feedback machine. And the sensitivity was lower: 95 dB versus 98 dB at 1W/1m. In coverage math, 3 dB is not small. It's half the acoustic output. To reach the same SPL at the back row, we'd need twice the amplifier power or twice the boxes. Suddenly the “28% cheaper” quote was looking more like a 200% system cost.

I caught it because we always do a listening test on a new model before committing. (I really should document that procedure properly—it's never been formally written down, it just happens every time we consider a new box.) We set up the cheaper cabinet next to the EV reference, same amp channels, same EQ, same source track. The difference was not subtle. The cheap box sounded like someone was holding a blanket over the horn. High end rolled off early, midrange had a boxy, honky character, and we measured audible comb filtering around the crossover point. The EV box wasn't perfect either—no speaker is—but it was honest. What the spec sheet said, the speaker did.

Here's where I'll be straight with you: I have mixed feelings about brand premiums. On one hand, a $400 and a $700 12-inch cabinet often have more in common than the price gap suggests. Part of that premium pays for brand, warranty logistics, and marketing, not just raw components. On the other hand—and this is the part that four years of inspections have hammered into me—when the venue is already booked and the date is fixed, “probably fine” is not a coverage plan.

The difference wasn't $300 per box. The difference was between a system I'd stake my reputation on and a system I'd be re-checking every hour before show day.

I walked our procurement manager through the dispersion numbers and the sensitivity gap. Then I showed her the fried voice coil I keep on my desk—the one that cost us a $22,000 redo in 2022, when a non-branded “equivalent” amplifier died at 4 ohms during soundcheck and took a rack of processing with it. She signed the EV order the same afternoon.

The Event and the Math That Mattered

The show went off without a system failure. I did a full QC pass on every cabinet before it left our warehouse—grille damage, rigging hardware, input panels, polarity checks, impedance sweeps. All 34 EV boxes passed. The array measured within 1 dB of the prediction software, which is honestly better than I expected for an outdoor stage on a windy day. No feedback issues from the front fills. The subs delivered the kind of chest-punch low end that makes a PA system feel worth every dollar.

Here's the thing I've come to believe after four years and roughly 150 serious orders: reliability is not a feature on a spec sheet. It's a pattern of behavior, observed over time. And I do not mean that as a slogan. I mean it as an operational fact—Electro-Voice gear fails rarely, and when it does, it fails predictably. I'll take predictable over cheap every single time.

Did we pay more? Yes. About 28% more on the speaker order. But the alternative—a system with compromised coverage, a 3 dB handicap at the back row, and a midrange that would have made FOH engineers grimace—would have cost us in ways the spreadsheet never showed. Feedback problems during rehearsals. Replaced boxes during load-in. A client who doesn't rebook the next season. You don't see those costs on the P&L until they're already there.

If you're buying PA for a project with a hard date, consider what you're actually comparing. Price per cabinet is not cost per event. The only thing more expensive than buying the right speaker is buying the wrong one twice.
