Value Over Price: An Electro-Voice Quality Manager on Buying Pro Audio Gear

A quick confession: I'm a quality manager at a professional audio company. For the last six years, I've approved loudspeakers before they ship, rejected entire batches over off-spec drivers, and occasionally ruined a vendor's day because their published SPL didn't match reality. I've also been on the buying side, so I've learned that pricing decisions are rarely as simple as they look.

Here's my blunt opinion: if you're choosing a stage monitor, a battery powered speaker, or any piece of audio gear by price tag alone, you're not making a smart financial decision—you're making a bet that the spec sheet is true and that nothing will fail.

In my experience, both sides of that bet fail too often.

Cheap gear has a hidden tax

Let me give you a specific example. In March 2023, I watched a local sound company try to save money on a few wired stage monitors. One of them measured 121 dB at 5% THD, and the other couldn't reach 125 dB without hitting its limiter. Yet both boxes said "132 dB peak."

How does that happen? Easy. There's no single rule saying what "max SPL" means. It could be measured with pink noise, with a sine wave, with 10% distortion allowed, or with no distortion at all. The numbers can look similar while the real-world outputs are completely different.

It means the number on the sheet is a number you can trust.

High price and high value are two different things

I don't want anyone to think I'm saying "buy expensive gear and you'll be fine." That would be just as wrong.

Consider the Wilson Audio Alexx V loudspeaker. It's a breathtaking, ultra-high-end home speaker that costs more than almost any professional monitor I'll ever approve. It's designed for people who care about sonic detail at an extreme level. But is it value for money for a small church? No. That's not what it's for.

Value isn't about the price tag in isolation. It's about whether the tool is right for the job, whether it will survive real conditions, and whether the company behind it will support you when something goes wrong. I've rejected premium-priced products because the driver tolerance was way off. And I've seen budget brands come through with a winner now and then. When I sign off on a product, I'm not just looking at the frequency response graph. I'm looking at the service manual, the availability of replacement drivers, and the way the power cable is strain-relieved. The difference between cheap gear and professional gear is often invisible until you have to repair it.

For example, most of our EV cabinets use standard handle mounting positions, but more importantly, the drivers and amp modules are available as spare parts. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a perfectly good budget speaker turned into e-waste because nobody sells a replacement driver. That's an environmental problem too, but more immediately, it's a money problem for the owner.

What about budget constraints?

I can already hear someone saying, "Easy for you to say. I only have enough money to buy a $300 speaker. What should I do?"

That's a fair question. I've been there. In my first year of working with sound, I bought a cheap board and a pair of plastic boxes because it's what I could afford. I don't regret the decision—it was the right choice at that time. But I do remember spending more on repairs and replacements than I originally saved.

If you're starting from zero, I'd recommend focusing on versatility. People sometimes ask me why I care so much about quality. It's because I've seen what happens when a product fails at the wrong moment. The DJ who loses a gig. The church whose service is disrupted. The band that has to finish a set with half the PA dead. Nobody wakes up wanting to be the reason a show went wrong.
