Why Loudspeaker Output Isn't About Wattage

I've been installing professional audio systems for 11 years. I've personally made and documented 21 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $4,300 in wasted budget on gear, labor, and rework. I'm not saying that to sound humble. I'm saying it because most loudspeaker output problems I've fixed were not caused by the equipment. They were caused by people who bought equipment the way I used to: by wattage.

Most of those systems were Electro-Voice. EV is not the only brand I use, but it keeps teaching me the same lesson. Loudspeaker output is not a number on the box.

The Surface Problem: Everyone Blames Power

From the outside, it looks like a spec sheet contest. A 2000W subwoofer sounds louder than a 1000W subwoofer, right? And a 12-inch speaker can't possibly match an 18-inch. People assume the biggest number wins. That's what I thought in my first year. It almost ruined a mosque loudspeaker project in 2017.

I was asked to design a mosque loudspeaker system for the outdoor call to prayer. The committee had already bought a huge amplifier and a single powerful-looking speaker. The result was distortion that carried two blocks away. The initial diagnosis was simple: not enough power. We added more. It got louder and less clear.

Here's the thing: the amplifier wasn't the bottleneck. The loudspeaker was in a bad location, the microphone was feeding back, and nobody had set input gain properly. The wattage was never the problem. I ordered a bigger amp anyway, because I didn't want to look like the problem was me. That was a $900 mistake. It made the system louder and even harder to understand. The system got a reputation for being too loud and unclear. That reputation followed it for years.

What's Actually Going On: Three Problems Underneath

1. Sensitivity beats wattage

Wattage tells you how much power a speaker can handle, not how loud it gets. Sensitivity tells you how much output the speaker produces from a given signal. The usual measurement is dB SPL at 1 watt, measured 1 meter away. That value is far more useful.

Let's use an example. A speaker with 100 dB sensitivity needs only 10 watts to hit 110 dB. Another with 90 dB sensitivity needs 100 watts to hit the same output. Both can accept 500W on paper. The second one will sound weak in the real world unless you feed it 10 times the power and are okay with the heat.

On an Electro-Voice spec sheet, don't read the marketing wattage first. Look for max SPL and sensitivity. Published EV specs (accessed July 2025) range from about 126 dB max SPL in the compact ZLX series to roughly 135 dB in the ETX series. Those numbers tell you more about what an audience will hear than the wattage does.

Wattage is a billboard. SPL is the product.

2. Coverage is part of output

An electro voice array speaker system can throw sound to the back of a hall. But only if the arrays are aimed, angled, and delayed correctly. I've seen line arrays that looked expensive and sounded worse than a single pole-mounted EV 12-inch. Not because the array modules were weak. Because nobody set the vertical angles. The system was technically loud, but the coverage pattern was wrong.

The client doesn't blame wattage confusion. They blame the integrator, the brand, and the person who told them what to buy. I've watched a $300 difference between two speaker choices turn into a $3,000 loss when the client took the next contract elsewhere.

My own worst example: I once agreed to a last-minute subwoofer swap without checking the sensitivity rating. A customer wanted to use an Orion HCCA102 10-inch 2000W subwoofer from an old car audio build because it was sitting in a closet. That was a red flag, but the deadline was tight and I didn't want to argue. The driver wasn't bad; it just wasn't built for that job. It got hot, the system sounded thin, and I ended up redoing the recommendation. The lesson: the lowest price and the biggest wattage number are not the same thing as the right tool.

A few years ago, the numbers said one 18-inch EV subwoofer per side was enough for an outdoor event. My gut said otherwise, because I'd done enough outdoor events to know how fast open-air bass disappears. I installed one, measured, then added the second. The client noticed the difference before I said a word. So glad I trusted both the measurement and the gut.

Under time pressure, I've made the same mistake in reverse. I had two hours to confirm a loudspeaker order. Normally I'd listen to both models and check dispersion data. Instead, I chose the one with more watts. It was a mistake. The coverage was wrong for the room, and we spent a week fixing what should have been caught in one hour. That's also true on the positive side. When I switched to higher-sensitivity, better-matched loudspeakers, client reactions changed. One regular customer commented on the clarity before asking about price. That's the quality-perception effect. Output quality becomes your brand image. The Fix (It's Not Sexy)

Stop shopping by power. Start with better questions:

  • What is the loudspeaker's sensitivity (1W/1m)?
  • What is the max SPL, measured honestly?
  • Where will the speaker sit, and will the coverage pattern reach the listeners?
  • What does the DSP preset do before you call it finished?

That's it. Once you check sensitivity, coverage, and placement, most loudspeaker output issues shrink dramatically. I also use a cheap SPL meter during setup and save the DSP preset file with notes. If the measured numbers don't line up with the design, I stop and look again.

I still keep a pre-install checklist. I check it before every job, even when it's a system I've done twenty times. That checklist caught 47 potential errors in the past 18 months. Most were things like wrong preset selected or cabinet angle changed during rigging. Not one was solved by buying a bigger amp.

That mosque project from 2017? We fixed it with better placement, a better mic, and proper gain staging. The loudspeaker and amplifier were mostly fine from the start. The lesson didn't cost $4,300 in wasted gear. It cost a week of embarrassment, which was enough.
