The Day the Budget Approval Stopped Making Sense

Two years ago, we approved a budget-variant column array for a conference center. The client specifically wanted to save money. The quote was $18,000. The EV alternative was $22,000. The client chose the $18,000.

Within 6 months, two of the eight modules had intermittent buzzing. The vendor blamed the venue power. We blamed the lack of PFC in the amplifier module. After 3 months of back-and-forth, we replaced them with the EV system anyway. How I Evaluate TCO for PA Systems Now

  1. Warranty Coverage: What's covered? What's explicitly excluded? Is it 3 years or 5? Does it include drivers? TWEETERS?

  3. System Integration: Does the brand offer predictable, documented rigging and DSP control? Or is it a one-off design?
  4. Resale Value: This is the one people miss. A well-maintained Electro-Voice system holds value. A no-name system is landfill material. If the venue closes in 5 years, that EV gear has market value.

This isn't about saying EV is always the answer. For certain budgets or temporary setups, a different choice might be valid. But make that choice with your eyes open about what comes after the purchase order is signed.

The upfront price is just the first chapter. The story of total cost is much longer—and far more expensive if you ignore it.
