How I Wasted $3,200 on the Wrong PA Speakers (And What I Learned About Electro-Voice vs. SVS Subwoofers)

You'd Think a Speaker Is a Speaker

Two years ago I spec'd audio for a boutique hotel renovation. The budget was tight. The client wanted 'big sound' in the ballroom, backyard bar, and lobby. I thought I could save money by pairing Electro-Voice ZLX-12P tops with a single SVS SB17 Ultra R Evolution subwoofer. Cheap, powerful, right?

The upside was $2,000 in savings. The risk was—well, I didn't think it through. The expected value said go for it, but the downside felt… avoidable. I pushed ahead anyway.

Never expected a $3,200 mistake. Turns out the difference between professional PA gear and a high-end home theater subwoofer isn't price. It's physics, durability, and application. Here's what I learned.

What We're Comparing: Professional PA vs. Consumer Subwoofer

This isn't a brand battle. Electro-Voice makes world-class pro audio. SVS makes killer subs for home theater. But put them in a commercial space and the gap becomes obvious.

We'll look at four dimensions: spl & coverage, power handling & reliability, installation & flexibility, and total cost of ownership.

Dimension 1: SPL & Coverage

The ZLX-12P tops hit 132 dB peak. The SVS sub? It's rated for 122 dB at 1 meter. Not bad. But coverage is the killer—the EV speakers are designed to throw sound across a 50-foot ballroom. The SVS sub, even with that massive driver, drops off rapidly past 30 feet. In the hotel lobby, the bar area was dead. The back yard? Forget it.

I measured: at 40 feet, the EV tops still delivered 105 dB. The SVS sub was down to 85 dB. That's not enough for background music, let alone dancing.

The surprise wasn't the sensitivity difference. It was how uniform the EV coverage stayed when we added a second subwoofer. SVS is designed for a single sweet spot. Professional rigs are built for even distribution.

Dimension 2: Power Handling & Reliability

Here's where I really messed up. The SVS SB17 Ultra is a passive radiator design. Great for transient bass in a living room. But I asked it to run 8 hours a day, 7 days a week. After three months, the voice coil smelled burnt. The EV subwoofers I eventually swapped in? They handle continuous sine-wave test tones at full power for hours. AES rated power—that's the industry standard. The SVS doesn't advertise AES testing.

Check the specs: the EV EKX-18S has a continuous power of 600W, program 1200W, peak 2400W. The SVS SB17 Ultra lists a 'RMS power handling' of 1500W. But that's for music program, not sustained use. (Should mention: I asked SVS tech support and they said it's not designed for commercial continuous operation. Oops.)

Roughly speaking, professional gear is rated for 100% duty cycle. Consumer gear is rated for maybe 20%.

Dimension 3: Installation & Flexibility

The hotel needed flush-mounted subs under the bar counters and in a ceiling soffit. The SVS sub is a wooden box with a cloth grille. No rigging points, no top-hat for pole mounting, no input for 70V systems. The EV subs come with threaded inserts for flying, a standard pole socket, and high-pass outputs for daisy-chaining. Installation took twice as long and cost $400 in custom brackets.

Granted, the SVS has Bluetooth. That's a nice feature for room tuning. But for a commercial system, you want a DSP network, not a phone app. The EV speakers can be controlled via a central DSP unit—makes maintenance easier.

I should add that the EV ZLX series also offers a Bluetooth version (the electro voice speaker bluetooth models like ZLX-12BT). That would have been a smarter compromise: professional sound plus wireless setup. But I didn't know about it at the time.

Dimension 4: Total Cost of Ownership

SVS SB17 Ultra: $2,800. EV EKX-18S: $2,200. Wait—the EV is cheaper? Yes, professional audio is often more affordable than high-end consumer once you factor in volume discounts and dealer pricing. But the real cost came later: the SVS sub died after 8 months. Repair estimate: $900. Then we replaced it with the EV sub. Total spend: $2,800 + $900 + $2,200 = $5,900, plus $400 in custom brackets, plus two service trips ($600).

$5,900 vs. $2,200 if I'd bought the EV sub first. (This doesn't include the hotel's lost revenue from broken sound system—but that's another story.)

What I'd Do Differently Today

If you're installing for a hotel, industrial PA, or any commercial venue:

  • Choose professional-grade gear with continuous power ratings. Look for AES or IEC standards. Avoid consumer subwoofers even if they seem cheaper.
  • Match the speaker to the coverage area. A single high-end sub won't fill a ballroom. Use multiple professional-grade subs designed for uniform coverage.
  • Don't skip installation hardware. Pro speakers come with rigging and mounting options. That saves custom fabrication.

What about electro voice stage monitors? For the hotel's live music corner, I later installed EV ZLX-12P wedges. They work perfectly as floor monitors—and double as main PA for small events. The industrial PA speaker line from EV (like the EVID series) would have been even better for the patio area: weatherproof, high efficiency.

As for the SVS SB17 Ultra—it's a fantastic home theater sub. For a dedicated cinema room, I'd recommend it. But for commercial use? Stick with pro audio. Informed customers make faster decisions. I'd rather spend 10 minutes explaining the difference than deal with mismatched expectations later.

Take this with a grain of salt: I'm not saying SVS is bad. It's exceptional for residential use. But if you're specifying for a hotel, industrial plant, or live venue, do yourself a favor—go with Electro-Voice, or any brand that builds for continuous duty. The cost of a mistake is higher than the premium for professional gear.
