Electro-Voice Speakers: An Office Buyer's Guide to 15-Inch PA Speakers and Small Powered PA Systems

After three years of buying office AV gear for a 400-person professional services company, I have one conclusion: Electro-Voice is the brand I'd order again for most corporate sound, but the biggest 15-inch speaker isn't always the right move. The room's shape, the coverage angle, and the total PA speaker package matter more than wattage or vintage reputation. (That's a lesson we learned the hard way in our 'temporary' all-hands setup.)

Why This Isn't a Fan Review

I'm the administrator who handles procurement for three offices. Since taking over purchasing in 2020, I've processed roughly 60-80 orders a year, from office supplies to conference room AV. Our annual AV budget is about $45,000, and I report to operations and finance. That means I care about total cost: service contracts, spare drivers, and whether the vendor answers the phone when the CEO's call starts at 8:50.

I don't have an audio engineering degree. I've learned by reading spec sheets, looking at loudspeaker components diagrams, and making mistakes. The opinion here is based on what works for our 400 employees, not for touring sound engineers.

Electro-Voice 15 Speaker: When It's Worth It

If you search for an 'electro voice 15 speaker,' you'll find two stories. The modern powered PA story, like the EV EKX-15P or ETX-15P, is the one I'd pay attention to for a business. The vintage cabinet story is a separate rabbit hole.

A 15-inch driver moves more air than a 10- or 12-inch driver, so it makes sense in bigger rooms, outdoor stages, and any event where drums or bass-heavy music are involved. The EV EKX-15P is a good example: it's loud enough for a 300-to-500-person outdoor area, has DSP presets, and—critically—it's serviceable. If a driver fails, a local AV tech can swap it without rebuilding the cabinet.

But a big driver isn't automatically better. Our training room is about 600 square feet with a 9-foot ceiling. When we tested a 15-inch point-source cabinet in there, the bass was boomy and vocals were muddy. The room's early reflections made it worse. A smaller speaker with a narrower coverage pattern would have been fine.

When I wouldn't buy a 15-inch

If your room is narrow, has low ceilings, or is full of glass and hard surfaces, don't assume a 15-inch speaker is the answer. That's the classic 'more speaker' mistake. I've made it. It doesn't sound louder; it sounds louder in one spot and muddier in the rest.

What a Loudspeaker Components Diagram Shows You

I started comparing speakers properly only after I made a loudspeaker components diagram part of my checklist. The reason? A speaker is a system: driver, crossover, waveguide, and enclosure. Never expected a small powered PA speaker to outperform a 15-inch cabinet in our lunchroom. Turns out dispersion pattern matters more than driver size.

We bought two EV Evolve 30M column systems for off-site events. The compact subwoofer and column array filled a 40-by-50-foot tent with speech that was understandable in the back row. The 15-inch speaker was louder up close but muddy off-axis and heavy to move. The small powered systems weigh less, pack into a car, and set up quickly. They're now the first thing I grab for a meeting room, town hall, or small event.

If someone asked me for a small powered PA speaker for a business, I'd point them to this category instead of a single 15-inch cabinet. For speech and light music, the even coverage is worth more than the raw SPL.

Electro Voice Vintage Speakers: Beautiful, but Not for Procurement

'Electro voice vintage speakers' is a rabbit hole. I went down it after a retired VP offered us a pair of old EV cabinets from his storage room. They looked impressive—15-inch woofers, horns, huge crossover capacitors. We thought we'd save money. We didn't.

The service tech warned us about replacement parts and crossover aging. I didn't listen. After a re-coned woofer, a replacement diaphragm that took two weeks to ship, and a final rental bill for our earnings event, we packed the vintage speakers back into storage. The lesson? I only believed the warning after ignoring it and paying the price.

Vintage EV speakers can be excellent for collectors and studios where someone is on call for maintenance. For a company event calendar, they're a gamble with no warranty.

Look at the Total PA Speaker Package

Before choosing any speaker, I list the total PA speaker package: mains, sub, monitor (if needed), stands, cables, DSP, and a case. A 'cheap' passive speaker might need a separate amplifier, processing, and cabling. An active speaker with built-in DSP and presets often costs less to set up and manage.

In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, we standardized on active EV speakers for that reason. It cut setup time for our facilities team by about two hours per event and eliminated the 'which amp channel is feeding this?' problem.

How I Compare PA Speakers Now

I use a four-point checklist now. It's not fancy, but it keeps me out of trouble.

  1. Maximum continuous SPL, not 'peak wattage.'
  2. Coverage pattern, in horizontal and vertical degrees.
  3. Weight and rigging points, if our staff handles setup.
  4. Service availability, including local parts and driver replacement costs.

The most frustrating part of comparing PA speakers: the same number can mean different things. You'd think a 1000W peak speaker would be louder than one rated 500W continuous, but often it isn't. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), manufacturers cannot make false advertising claims, but they can use different measurement methods. The buyer's job is to compare apples to apples.

Where Electro-Voice Doesn't Fit

Electro-Voice isn't the right choice for every situation. If you need a battery-powered speaker for outdoor training sessions, EV's current ZLX/EKX lines will keep you tied to a power outlet. If you need a discreet installed ceiling speaker for a conference room, there are better form factors. And if your space needs a flown line array with rigging design, call an AV consultant before choosing a brand.

That's the part of buying decisions that rarely makes it into product pages: a product is good only within its boundaries. Our EV speakers are excellent for plug-and-play corporate events, small concerts, and rented venues. I'd buy them again. I'd also keep a small powered EV system in the equipment closet for the rooms where a 15-inch cabinet is overkill.
