You can buy a 12-inch powered PA speaker for $249. It has a 1,000-watt sticker, a grille that flexes when you poke it, and a frequency response curve drawn by someone very optimistic. Or you can buy an Electro-Voice 12-inch speaker—ZLX-12P, EKX-12P, or ELX-12P—and pay two or three times more. This comparison is about whether that gap is real.

And when a PA speaker deal tempts you, check the specs that matter: max SPL, usable frequency range, weight, and warranty. Not peak watts. If a listing only offers watts and a pretty photo, assume the rest of the story is weak.
